Finding a song's key

Choose a file, read the key, then put it to use.

Your browser decodes up to a minute of the song, taken from across it, measures how strongly each of the twelve notes sounds, and compares that profile with all 24 major and minor keys. The closest match comes first, with its Camelot code for harmonic mixing.

Why major and minor get mixed up

C major and C minor share their root, fourth and fifth, so a song built mostly on those notes scores close to both. That is why the second guess is shown. Play each root chord along with the chorus, and the one that fits is the key.

Pair it with vocal removal

Singing a cover in another key? Remove the vocals, then move the instrumental up or down by as much as 6 semitones on the result page. The karaoke maker walks through picking a key that suits your voice.
